Wellness and Health Tourism in Malaysia: Current Barriers and Recommendations

The rising popularity of wellness tourism among travellers has compelled tourism stakeholders in some countries to reconsider their management plans and regulations to reinvent places as wellness tourist destinations. Traditional wellness retreats have been combined with contemporary approaches in several Asian nations to appeal to their wellness business. Furthermore, modern medical treatments at low and easy prices have boosted the wellness tourism business in these nations. Malaysia is one of these countries that has made significant investments to promote its wellness tourism business and has well-taped its traditional wellness resorts with cutting-edge technology. In addition, the infrastructure of medical tourism has also been drafted to facilitate medical tourists. Though Malaysia holds a recognised position in wellness tourism destinations, there have been some operational limitations and managerial drawbacks in the wellness tourism industry. In the first place, this study aims to elaborate on the wellness tourism industry of Malaysia and unveil the barriers and constraints in the latter half. Findings suggested that emphasis on the sustainably smart model (in acquiescence to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) manifesto), human resource training, and innovation would result in Malaysia’s distinctive position in the wellness tourism industry. This study extends implications for Malaysia’s wellness and health tourism industry, primarily in the post-pandemic situation.
