Japanese martial arts in Japan are regarded as a way of life and comprises of physical, spiritual and moral dimensions to help focus on self-improvement, fulfilment and personal growth. The origin of traditional Japanese martial arts can be found in the warrior traditions of the Samurai who were proficient in Zen philosophy, armed and unarmed combat. Modern-day traditional Japanese martial arts include many styles which derived from the Samurai, and these include Karate and Judo. Both Karate and Judo are Olympic sports and considered Japanese cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
