Middle-Class Consumers Seeking Health, Rejuvenation, and Relaxation in Asian Regions
摘要
In the past two decades, wellness tourism has become one of the major niche markets in many destinations across the world, particularly in Asia witnessing exponential growth (Global Wellness Institute, 2018). The continuous growth of wellness tourism is due to several factors, such as the desire to experience new activities, escape from hectic lives, spiritual balance, and physical improvement, and pursue cultural and recreational activities, and diversity in wellness tourism products and services. Asia offers diverse wellness services not only spa treatments but also many other forms of services ranging from traditional Chinese medicine, Thai massage, Ayurveda and Yoga in India, Meditation and Spirituality in Nepal to Traditional bathhouses in South Korea. This chapter will discuss services offered to wellness tourists in detail using cases from Asian countries as illustrations. The term wellness is often described differently from country to country; hence, the chapter will further explain the relative terms such as wellness, health, and medical tourism in the Asian context for a clearer understanding. Moreover, the barriers to the growth of the wellness tourism industry in Asian countries will also be discussed. The chapter concludes by suggesting future directions to overcome these barriers for the holistic development of wellness tourism in Asia.
