Scientific investigation of earthquakes, characterized by its timing and multidisciplinary features, plays an important role in deepening the understanding of the nature of earthquakes and the reduction of the risk of seismic disasters. With new techniques emerging, the scientific investigation of earthquakes has had significant advancements. As reviewed in this introductory chapter, all the chapters in the book are aligned along this direction. The book itself is hoped to initiate the endeavor of systemization and the establishment of the practice-oriented theoretical framework.
