Sasaki and Hatakemaya (1962) introduced the Sasakian structure with the help of the previous work of Sasaki in Sasaki (Tohoku Math J 12:459–476, 1960). But the first attempt was made in Blair (Contact Manifolds in Riemannian Geometry, 1976) to spread the interest for the subject. The Sasakian structure is regarded an odd-dimensional analogue of the Kähler structure, and thus, Sasakian manifolds relate to K-contact manifolds as Kähler manifolds relate to almost Kähler manifolds.
