Recycling Magnesia Carbon Refractory Bricks from the Steel Industry: Towards Resource Conservation and Sustainable Development

Magnesia carbon brick, known for its high resistance to corrosion and abrasion, is an essential refractory material in the steel industry. Due to environmental and economic pressures in recent decades, the recycling of carbon magnesia bricks from steel furnaces has received increasing attention. This study explores the recycling of magnesia-carbon refractory bricks using two methods: flotation to separate MgO and carbon and combustion to recover MgO. The magnesia obtained from the flotation method has a MgO content of 81.56 wt.%, while that from the burning method has a MgO content of over 93 wt.%. The total magnesia recovery efficiency reached approximately 70 wt.% of the original sample. The two approaches demonstrate the potential of sustainable recycling practices in the refractories industry, contributing to developing a circular economy.
