Utilizing Dredged Sediments as a Sustainable Backfill Material in Construction

In the context of global maritime operations, safeguarding waterway safety in rivers, estuaries, and seaports stands as a critical imperative for fostering sustainable economic and environmental stewardship. This imperative drives the need for extensive annual dredging operations aimed at optimizing navigational efficiency and preserving ecological integrity. Dredged sediment, distinguished by its accelerated moisture content, commonly presents challenges in direct incorporation within construction endeavors, leading to its disposal in waste repositories. While certain countries have recognized the potential valorization of dredged material as a natural resource, the practice remains nascent in the Vietnamese context. This article delves into the prospective processing and utilization of dredged sludge in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province as a promising avenue for backfill materials in civil infrastructure development projects. The comparative analysis of dredged material against the standards outlined in QCVN 07:2009/BTNMT and QCVN 40/BTNMT indicates compliance with environmental safety thresholds, making it suitable for use as filling material. Additionally, physical and mechanical evaluations demonstrate that particle composition, CBR value, and K density conform to required specifications. However, the swelling index exceeds the acceptable limit of 3%, necessitating treatment or reinforcement to mitigate swelling and enable effective future utilization as filling material.
