Offsite Construction and BIM Integration Challenges in New Zealand: Stakeholder’s Perspective

The transformation of prefabrication into large-scale offsite manufacturing technology in the construction industry is a paradigm-shifting development. It has positively transformed productivity rates, reduced cost and time, and improved quality. Building information modelling (BIM) tools and methods are crucial to facilitate offsite construction (OSC) and maintain functional digital construction models. Even though research on BIM and OSC has been done in various fields, their current integration challenges from stakeholders’ perspectives are still unclear, overlooked, and lack documentation, including in New Zealand. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the challenges of integrating OSC and BIM in the New Zealand construction industry from various viewpoints. A survey was conducted to investigate 19 challenges, identify differences in how stakeholders perceive them, and understand the specific challenges each group faces. This study will contribute to developing customised solutions and improvements catering to each group’s unique perspectives and concerns. Ultimately, this study has the potential to promote the broader adoption of OSC and BIM integration in New Zealand’s construction industry and enhance project outcomes.
