Towards an Innovative Low-Cost Instrument to Measure Outdoor Light at Night

Outdoor lighting is an essential element of urban environments, extending activities into the night and promoting safety. However, artificial light at night (ALAN) also poses challenges as it can disrupt ecosystems and human circadian rhythms. Accurate measurement of ALAN is crucial for setting baselines and assessing lighting schemes. While various instruments exist, none are universally applicable. This paper introduces an innovative low-cost imaging tool that leverages off-the-shelf camera technology to measure outdoor light at night. This tool aims to be rich in data, cost-effective, easy to use, mechanically robust, and versatile across research domains. The prototype unit comprises a ZWO astronomical camera that captures and stores regular images via a Raspberry Pi. This tool addresses the need for comprehensive ALAN measurement in the built environment and supports the journey towards a sustainable future.
