Collaborative Risk Management and Dependency Structure Matrix in Green Building Designs: A Synthesis of Three Knowledge Areas

The design process of green buildings (GBs) has a collection of tasks that are interdependent and are performed by different stakeholders. The interdependency of tasks has resulted in risks that are tightly coupled and are managed using existing risk management (RM) practices. However, these practices still take little account of the interdisciplinary and interdependent nature of the green design process. The chapter introduces a synthesis of three knowledge areas to examine how a shift in RM can accommodate the use of collaborative risk management (CRM) in developing interdisciplinary strategies for interdependency challenges. Modeling the interdependencies can lead to a greater understanding of these processes and avoid the careless processing of incomplete or inaccurate information during the development of design solutions. A multiple case study of four projects was used with empirical data from semi-structured interviews of 27 experienced practitioners who have been in design teams of GBs. A matrix-based approach of using Dependency Structure Matrix to integrate the stakeholder dimension and the task dimension to solve the tightly coupled risks enabled CRM to filter out most complexities. Synthesizing these theories referred to the level of interrelatedness among the stakeholders, their tasks, and their risks and a need for collaboration. Effective collaborative practices need stakeholders to acquire new knowledge about the dynamic management of risk which plays a major role in achieving value-for-money and cost-efficiency in designing green buildings. Strategically, a culture shift is required that will promote risk and responsibility sharing, innovation, and the alignment of design interests between stakeholders.
