Bioethanol is a promising alternative for gasoline as it is produced mainly from corn and sugarcane. However, alternative sources of corn starch and cellulose are required since both corn and sugarcane are primary sources of food. Landfill capacities are shrinking due to accumulated waste that requires utilisation into value added products for effective waste management systems and reduction of environmental pollution problems due to shortage of waste disposal areas. Moreover, fossil fuels emit a high number of greenhouse gases which are another global concern. Producing bioethanol from waste reduces GHG emissions and environmental pollution. This chapter focuses on utilisation of waste such as municipal solid waste, lignocellulosic feedstock, food waste into bioethanol as conversion of waste to energy and valuable chemicals. This is achieved by pre-treatment techniques, hydrolysis and fermentation.
