The literature on oral health and disability has picked up in recent years which shows an increased interest in this section of the population. Overall, the general fact is that people with special needs require individualised treatment plans, considerations for accessibility as well as communication. Research in this domain needs to be standardised in its reporting in terms of defining people with disabilities and special needs, amongst other things. Greater advocacy for dental or oral health care in such individuals will hopefully lead to a more rapid and effective integration of these individuals into not only health care but society as a whole as well.
