There is evidence in literature to suggest the association of periodontal disease with systemic conditions which further emphasises the importance of management. People with special needs face accessibility issues in terms of oral health care, and this might further create problems in treating periodontal disease seeing as it requires a long-term commitment from both the practitioner’s and patient’s end. Treatment strategies and home care need to be tailored to the patient’s specific needs while taking the parent or care-giver into confidence so as to ensure successful long-term outcomes.
