People living with disabilities encounter a number of accessibility issues be they physical or social. The practitioner, care-givers and society in general need to acknowledge these challenges faced by such individuals and make necessary and reasonable arrangements to aid those living with disabilities in accessing care. These measures can range from physical changes to behavioural ones. In order to ensure cooperation, compliance and any progress in care, an effective communication strategy needs to be employed. People with special needs may present significant challenges as a result of their disabilities and underlying conditions. The practitioner and dental team need to ensure that they are aware of the various strategies they can employ to establish communication with such individuals so as to ensure long-term outcomes of treatment.
