India has also been in the midst of demographic, economic, and technological transitions. The trends and forecasts promise the nation to become one of the fastest growing consumer appliances markets propelled by rapid rate of urbanization, enhanced household electrification, raising per capita income and women participation in the workforce (Price Waterhouse Coopers. Future of consumer durables and electronics in India—the changing landscape 2018). Factors like growing aspirational middle class with better disposable incomes, and better as well as convenient access to consumer products have also been contributing towards increasing emissions levels, both per capita and per household over time. India made significant progress towards improving energy access and digital inclusion over the last few years. India’s annual per capita energy consumption is 0.6 tonnes of oil equivalent, about a third of the world average according to the Economic Survey of 2018–2019 (MoF 2019). Share of renewable energy in the total energy mix has been consistently increasing where solar energy generation is leading the pack. Around 75 crore people in India gained access to electricity between 2000 and 2019 (IEA 2020). According to the Government of India announcement, India had achieved its goal of providing electricity to almost every household in March 2019 (IEA 2020). Indian population is projected to increase to 1.7 billion by 2042 (UN 2017) and projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by 2025. Projection done by NITI Aayog indicates that the electricity consumption for the residential sector is expected to increase 6–13 times by 2047.
