Gravity Anomalies and Structural Features of the Vøring Basin in the Norwegian Offshore

The Vøring Basin is located in the offshore central part of Norway, with favorable geological conditions for oil and gas accumulation. Numerous oil and gas fields have been discovered in the eastern part of the basin, while the complex structural area in the west is considered a key area for breakthroughs in oil and gas exploration. In order to study the gravity anomalies and structural characteristics of the Vøring Basin in the Norwegian offshore area, data on free air gravity anomalies in the region were collected and compiled, and Bouguer gravity anomalies were calculated. Based on this, the Bouguer gravity anomalies were processed using a moving average method to obtain residual gravity anomalies. By combining existing geological data, a detailed analysis of the characteristics of Bouguer gravity anomalies and residual gravity anomalies was conducted, identifying the distribution of fault structures in the Vøring Basin. The study reveals that the Vøring Basin features four major boundary faults (F1 ~ F4) and numerous secondary faults. These faults can be divided into three parts from south to north, with the fault group in the southern region mainly trending in a near north–south direction, the fault group in the central region mainly trending in a northeast direction, and the fault group in the northern region exhibiting more right-hand rotation on the basis of extension in the central part, forming three areas of gravity anomalies with directional changes. Additionally, two sets of cutting faults trending northwest and near east–west have developed within the basin, controlling the development of secondary structures in the area. Through the study of gravity anomalies, the geological structural characteristics of the area are clarified, providing evidence for predicting favorable exploration areas for oil and gas in unexplored areas of the Vøring Basin.
