Visual storytelling is an important component in the Diploma in Illustration Design with Animation Programme at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore. Students are expected to craft compelling narratives that attract, inspire and motivate action for social impact in their studio projects. Students usually draw inspiration for stories from their personal stories or experiences, common teenage-related topics such as depression, peer pressure, bullying are the usual topics behind the narratives for their projects. Adopting the use of digital storytelling as a pedagogical approach broadens students’ knowledge and emphasises the importance of many other issues within the community that they live in. Students can explore alternative social issues, create impactful stories with memorable characters to inform audiences, retell historical events and others, rather than just their personal narratives. By applying Shulman’s signature pedagogy approach to think (understand and explore), perform (apply and create) and act (critique, reflect and improvise) in design studios, students are encouraged to collaborate with their peers, empathise with the characters in their stories and immerse their audience with creative touch points on various digital platforms. This chapter shows how adopting digital storytelling as a pedagogical tool facilitates deep and purposeful learning. In the design process, students realise the power of visual stories as a tool to engage their audience, their passion and motivation for their projects.
