With the Heart, the Mind, and the Sight: Cultivating Creativity in Fashion Pedagogy
摘要
Creativity is important in the practice of fashion design: a successful fashion designer is assumed to be highly creative. Fashion schools impart skills and knowledge in fashion and guide aspiring students in becoming a creative design practitioner. References to fashion design pedagogy are limited but have the commonality of focusing on design critique, which is a signature pedagogy in the field of design. While pedagogy in fashion is distinguishable from non-design practice, extant literature suggests diverse and varied pedagogy to facilitate creativity. Using a qualitative study, this paper explores teaching practices in creativity through interviews of three fashion lecturers from the School of Fashion Studies at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore. Through their stories and experiences, values and beliefs on creativity illuminate distinctive and defining teaching practices, a signature pedagogy for cultivating creativity among fashion students studying in Singapore.
