Biodegradation and Bioremediation Efficiency of Mangrove-Associated Actinobacteria

In tropical and subtropical coastal locations, mangroves are a special type of woody plant community found along intertidal coastlines. Among the most prolific ecosystems on Earth are mangrove forests. Owing to the mangrove’s high salinity, strong winds, high tides, anaerobic soils, muddiness, and other characteristics, not much is known about the bacterial population that lives there, particularly actinobacteria, which have the ability to create bioactive compounds with particular activity. Several environmentally friendly methods for cleaning up contaminated areas have emerged over the past two decades, using microbial species. This is one area where actinobacteria have shown promise in the breakdown of pollutants. Because they are widely distributed throughout both aquatic and terrestrial habitats, members of the phylum Actinobacteria are known for their cosmopolitan habits. As they break down complex polymers, recycle chemicals, and produce bioactive molecules, actinobacteria are essential ecological players in the environment. Hence, the application of actinobacteria in biotechnology to remove pollutants seems appealing. This is possible with the use of environmentally friendly bioremediation technology, which introduces particular microorganisms to contaminated areas to significantly increase their capacity for degradation. This chapter describes actinobacteria as an eco-friendly and a promising bacterium for the biodegradation of contaminants.
