Applications and Commercialization Challenges of Voltammetry in Biosensing Applications

Electrochemical voltammetry is a crucial analytical technique extensively used in biosensors for its rapid and sensitive analyte detection capabilities. Initially developed to study the redox properties of biochemical species, voltammetric biosensing has proven invaluable for applications requiring precise, real-time results in medical diagnostics, environmental pollutants, and food contaminants. However, technical and commercial challenges include sensitivity, selectivity, reliability, reproducibility, miniaturization, regulation, production costs, and market acceptance. This chapter examines these challenges and proposes solutions such as improving sensitivity, developing standardized protocols to increase reliability, and implementing new strategies to reduce costs and accelerate market adoption. It provides a forward-looking perspective on future research and development directions aimed at maximizing the potential of voltammetry in biosensors.
