What Is the Gnostic Inner Sacrifice? Renouncing Representation
摘要
This chapter explores the concept of gnostic inner sacrifice, a transformative process where the practitioner renounces all forms of self-representation. This practice involves multiple stages, beginning with the abandonment of sensory desires and worldly attachments, progressing to the internal renunciation of conceptual frameworks and views, and culminating in the rejection of even yoga itself as a form of self-grasping. Rooted in philosophy, gnostic renunciation serves as a path to spiritual purification and liberation (mokṣa) through knowledge (jñāna). The chapter frames this process as a rite de passage, akin to a liminal phase in which the practitioner transitions from dualistic, worldly existence to a higher, non-dual reality. Philosophical inquiry, structured within a taxonomic framework, guides this process, ultimately leading to the dissolution of distinctions and the cessation of all practices, including philosophical debate itself. The gnostic path, though reclusive, is deeply embedded within institutional contexts, allowing for social recognition of the initiate's transformation.
