Engineering Interventions for High Biofuel Production in Forage Crops

Biofuels have gained significant importance due to limited oil reserves, energy security concerns, and increasing environmental awareness regarding climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Forage crops have the potential for producing the biofuels due to their minimal input requirements and ease of management. In this respect, engineering interventions play a significant role in enhancing biofuel production, specifically in forage crops. Various challenges faced in maximizing biofuel yield from forage crops, such as inefficient biomass conversion, utilization, and low energy content, can be addressed through engineering interventions. This chapter discusses engineering techniques aimed at improving the biomass quality, physical property, and quantity of forage crops. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of efficient harvesting methods to optimize biofuel production while minimizing environmental impact. The present chapter discusses a comprehensive framework for enhancing biofuel yield from forage crops through integrating state-of-the-art engineering approaches with traditional agricultural practices. This holistic approach not only addresses the growing demand for renewable energy sources but also ensures sustainability across the biofuel production scope.
