Economics, Intellectual Property, and Environmental Aspects of Bioenergy and Their Commercial Utilization

Bioenergy reduces negative impacts from conventional fossil fuels, ensuring ecosystem sustainability. India is the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of biofuel, contributing to a carbon-neutral economy and meeting global environmental standards. Bioenergy is produced from agricultural biomass and diverse crop species, which can be classified into three generations. The first generation of biofuels involves the production of biofuel from edible food crops such as sugarcane, sugarbeet, sorghum, corn, wheat, barley, rapeseed, sunflower, and canola. The second generation of feedstocks includes non-edible crops such as camelina and jatropha. The third generation relies on algae for manufacturing. Economic factors, market conditions, and laws all have an impact on investment decisions and bioenergy innovation. This book chapter investigates the interaction between economics, intellectual property, and environmental concerns in bioenergy commercial applications.
