The Standard Seawater Service has provided Standard Seawater (SSW) since 1902. Although SSW is the only standard for salinity measurements around the world, for various reasons some countries have produced their own standards. Japanese Standard Seawater (JSSW) was produced and distributed in Japan for Japanese researchers from 1942 until the 1980s to ensure comparability of salinity measurements during and after World War II. The history of JSSW is reviewed based on the information available in the literature.
