This chapter explores how indigenous communities engage with digital platform ecosystems with the goal to preserve their language and knowledge. Specifically, we explore the challenges the communities encounter in this process, i.e. “oral tradition” and “digital divide”, and the role of platform governance in alleviating or aggravating these challenges. Theoretically, we introduce the concept of “hybrid” governance—the model relying on collective governance efforts as well as the active governance by the platform owner. Our study indicates the important role of the latter in increasing inclusivity of digital platform ecosystems. Furthermore, our findings highlight the importance of keeping a degree of flexibility within “best practices”, which enables indigenous communities adjust them to their unique settings and needs.
