Conjugated polymers have attracted tremendous attention over the last 50 years. Though conjugated polymers are prepared via polycondensation which is expected to proceed via a step-growth mechanism, a chain-growth reaction is possible for AB-type monomers under the right conditions. In this chapter, the chain-growth or controlled polymerization to prepare conjugated polymers is reviewed. An introduction to the mechanism is included, highlighting how the metal coordinates to the growing chain during the cross-coupling cycle. Following this, some recent developments in the field over the last 20 years are discussed, with an emphasis on the most highly used cross-coupling methods, namely, Kumada–Corriu, Negishi, and Suzuki–Miyaura.
