With batter flexibility in new energy consumption and adaptation to new power systems, variable-speed pumped storage units, in which the corresponding control strategies and experiments have become research hotspots, have been gradually promoted and applied. In this paper, a hybrid simulation experimental platform contains models of pump turbine, hydraulic actuator, power generation motor, power network on RTDS system and governor, excitation, coordination control and monitoring equipment of the variable speed unit was established based on the complete characteristic curve of Fengning variable-speed pumped storage unit, which would be first applied in China. The moderating effects of the variable speed pumped storage unit with different control strategies, speed priority and power priority. Under generator mode and pump mode were studied. The moderating experiments of governor under guide vane opening mode, power mode and speed mode were tested, the test waveform were analyzed and compared and the conclusion was given, which would provide an important reference for the localization and engineering practice of the variable speed pumped storage units.
