Once an open electrical circuit fault befalls in both the upper and minor SMs in the MMC system for photovoltaic inverter, the change in electrical condenser voltage is not significant, and the residual voltage of the capacitor is very small. Conventional methods cannot diagnose it quickly and accurately. Therefore, a method for diagnosing open circuit malfunction in power devices of MMC system submodules for photovoltaic inverter based on Mahalanobis distance is proposed. This article confirms the efficiency of the aimed method over model and experiments.
