Power Loss Regulation Based on Elastic Capacitance Voltage for MMCs in Photovoltaic Inverter in Application

For modular multilevel converters (MMCs) in photovoltaic inverter application, power loss control of power modules in submodules (SMs) is a significant factor for secure and dependable operation. Under usual operation, there may be apparent power loss differences among SMs in the arm due to aging of power devices, mismatching of module parameters, etc. This article raises a power loss regulation method based on elastic capacitance voltage control (ECVC-PLR) method. Under centralized control for MMCs, SM power loss balance could be materialized by adjusting the capacitor voltage average value of every SM in the arm, whilst maintaining the dc-link voltage invariable. The proposed ECVC-PLR method can significantly ensure balanced distribution of power loss among the SMs within the MMC arm, thereby improving the dependability of MMC under centralized control. The simulation study in this article is conducted using the tool of time-domain professional emulation PSCAD/EMTDC.
