Effect of Site Grading and Dewatering on Ground improvement–A Case Study

Numerous ground improvement techniques based on suitability are adopted when the ground is relatively weak to support the imposed load from structures. In recent days, many of the ground improvement practices are ahead of theories. In this paper, the effect of site grading and dewatering on improvement of soil strength has been studied. The project location was in Barauni, Bihar, India. A geotechnical investigation was conducted during October 2021 within the project area to assess the sub-soil conditions. The project area was classified into waterlogged area and non-waterlogged area. Based on the sub-soil conditions, stone column was proposed to achieve the required safe bearing capacity at founding level and to mitigate the liquefaction issues. Before commencing the ground improvement activities, grading using structural filling composed of well-compacted sand for around 1–3.5 m depth was done. After completion of site grading work, a trial installation of stone column had been attempted but the vibro-rig failed to penetrate the soil after 2–3 m below the finished ground level. Based on this trial, it was concluded that the soil had improved due to site grading and dewatering. In evidence of the conclusive statement, confirmatory boreholes were conducted at the same place. A considerable improvement in the sub-soil strata had been observed. This paper covers the detailed shear strength parameters variation, before and after structural grade filling works and final foundation recommendations.
