One of the techniques used for stabilizing soft soil is the use of stone columns, often referred to as granular piles, which are typically used to boost stability and carrying capacity. In this paper, a quantitative examination has been carried out to study the behavior of a virgin clay substrate in terms of spent ballast column installation, namely an ordinary spent ballast column (OSC). 摘要

One of the techniques used for stabilizing soft soil is the use of stone columns, often referred to as granular piles, which are typically used to boost stability and carrying capacity. Along with lowering the compressibility of loose and finely graded soils, it also hastens the consolidation effect by enhancing pore drainage. Recognizable “natural” ground treatment technique or foundation system now in use is arguably the use of stone columns. Spent Ballast is a waste of various sizes can be used as the column material to build the columns. In this paper, a quantitative examination has been carried out to study the behavior of a virgin clay substrate in terms of spent ballast column installation, namely an ordinary spent ballast column (OSC). Various parameters were considered for the study to analyze the behavioral changes following spent ballast column placement. Also, a comparative numerical analysis was conducted to understand the working behavior of geosynthetic encased spent ballast column (GESC). The geogrid encased spent ballast column (GESC) technology has been designed to enhance the load carrying capacity of spent ballast columns through boosting the confinement effect. The findings demonstrate that the geogrid encasement's additional confinement boosted the spent ballast column's rigidity and decreased the settlement of the soft ground. A detailed comparison among virgin soft clay bed, OSC, and GESC have been explained in this paper.
