Leptadenia hastata is a wild edible liana used in agroforestry farming systems in dryland regions. It provides many socio-economic and ecological services to agrofarmers. However, there is paucity about study on the nutritional content of this plant species as agroforestry systems studies focus mainly on the values of woody species. Thus, this study tried to close the aforementioned gap by determining nutritional values of the various parts of Leptadenia hastata. The fresh parts (leave, roots, stems, and fruits) were obtained from the peri-agroforestry systems at the periphery of Niamey city in Niger. Phytochemical screening was done followed by extraction through cold maceration and nutritional value content tests. The obtained data showed that the dry drug of the leaves + young stems mixture was fine grayish-green in color, odorless, with a slightly bittersweet flavor and low humidity content. It had the highest amount of calcium (161.77 mg/kg) and sodium (6.58 mg/kg). The seeds had the highest amount of lipids (19.27%) and protein (38.58%) while the pericardium had the highest amount of carbohydrate (78.40%), fiber (45.21%) and potassium (142.37 mg/kg) which did not vary significantly (P = 0.019). The phytochemical screening of the aqueous and ethereal extracts revealed the presence of alkaloids, polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, sterols and triterpenes, saponins, and quinones, but the absence in all parts of anthocyanin. The different elements revealed in Leptadenia hastata make it a multipurpose wild plant and good candidate for its integration in agroforestry food systems in Niger for combating food insecurity and malnutrition.
