The difference between them is that poets are thought to be arrogant because they tend to be proud and lonely by nature, while mathematicians are thought to be unapproachable because they exist on a transcendent plane. Thus, in art and literary circles, poets are often considered to be socially inferior to novelists in the same way that mathematicians are considered socially inferior to physicists in scientific and technological associations. But these things are only superficial.
