In this paper authors consider the issues of predicting tectonic fractures using geomechanical modeling. Relevance of this issue is based on searching of high permeability zones (localization of sweet spots) and assessment of the risks of fluid loss during the drilling process (Johri M in Fault Damage Zones—Observations, Dynamic Modeling, and Implications on Fluid Flow. StanfordUniversity, 2012). Fracture prediction was based on a method of boundary elements that is realized in a tectonic inversion model (Maerten F et al in Comput Geosci 72:1–17, 2014). It was shown that in the considered area three tectonic regimes have been identified with different degrees of probability. In addition, there were localized zones of high fracturing on the basis of paleo displacement maps and predicted fracture intensity. The authors pay attention to well design and risk assessment during the construction process: collapses and losses in high fracturing zones.
