Chemical Characteristics, Source Apportionment and Health Risk Analysis of Atmospheric Particulates at the Urban Traffic Site in Vijayawada City, Andhra Pradesh India

The present study collected 24 hourly PM10 and PM2.5 samples in Vijayawada city of Andhra Pradesh, India. The average concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 at the monitoring site were 122 ± 29 and 70 ± 14 µg/m3 during the winter season, which exceeds the 24 h average National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). PM concentration during summer was well below the NAAQS. The CMB model deciphered the dataset into vehicular, industries, construction, road dust, secondary inorganic aerosols, coal, and biomass burning as the major sources of both the size fraction with seasonally varied contributions over Vijayawada city. Health risk assessment of particulate bound elements was also estimated. For non-carcinogenic risk (Hq), all the metals hold a value less than 1 (Hq < 1), indicating acceptable risk among adults and children, except Mn (Hq > 1). Carcinogenicity exposure to Cr was in the range of 10–5 and 10–4 in adults and children with higher cancer risk compared to USEPA standards, i.e. 1 × 10–6.
