Phantom Touch in VR is an emerging phenomenon where a user can experience another person’s touch in virtual reality without any real-life contact or haptic devices. It is a pseudo-haptic brain trick which allows interpersonal touch interactions to seem real to an individual. There is ongoing research on how Phantom Touch can be developed in people, as well as understanding what psychophysiological effect the pseudo-haptic has on users. An effective method has been developed through which users can generate Phantom Touch—the Head-to-Toe method (HTT). The technique was tested on participants, with heart rate and qualitative data being collected during the experiments to analyze Phantom Touch’s effect. This chapter presents findings from the ongoing study and how the discoveries on Phantom Touch in VR can be implemented into the education field—to enhance teaching, student development, and support. The topics which are covered include—immersive education, student mental health, studying abroad, isolation (COVID-19), and cultural knowledge (including travel, language, and student exchange). There is discussion on possible virtual simulations and how they could be applied in academia.
