H2/CO-Rich Syngas Production from Biochar CO2/O2 Gasification

This paper investigated a two-stage H2/CO-rich syngas production from endocarp coconut char (ECC) as the feedstock in continuous CO2/O2 gasification process. The gasification experiment was conducted at temperatures of 700 and 800 °C with a hold time of 30 min. The gasification agent in this experiment is a mixed gas (79/21%) of CO2/O2. The results showed that the yield of char and syngas was 60.2–72.6% and 27.4–39.8%, respectively, while the gas volume was 0.040–0.062 Nm3. The average syngas composition was around 9.8–26.8% CO2, 20.2–22.9% H2, 42.9–58.2% CO, and 3.5–5.6% CH4 depending upon the gasification temperature. The syngas composition ratios were 0.75–2.34 of H2/CO2 and 1.6–5.94 for CO/CO2. Syngas lower heating value was around 9.6–11.1 MJ/Nm3. Based on these findings, the continuous feed CO2/O2 biochar gasification could be used to produce H2/CO-rich syngas for further conversion process. This underscores its viability for further technological development and optimization.
