Basic Theoretical Questions About World China Studies: With Regard to Tan Chung’s Question
摘要
Chapter 1 explains the mystery about China’s say. Tan Chung, a famous Chinese-American scholar on China Studies, raised the famous question: Why scholars of China Studies Abroad do not read Chinese books at the Sixth World Forum on China Studies. What is World China Studies? How to avoid the mis-interpretation of China with the West-dominated discourse? How to understand China Studies Abroad properly, deeply, and accurately? It underlines the necessity and importance of seeking to establish the methodology of Critical China Studies. To approach China-related propositions from the perspective of two-way comparison between China and the West helps to transcend the limitation of interpreting China from the Western perspective. This chapter attempts to make explorations and give answers in three sections: the definition of World China Studies, methodology, and the history of domestic reexamination of China Studies Abroad.
