Adolescence comes from the Latin word adolescere, which means to grow, to mature. Adolescence can be termed as a period from the onset of puberty till early adulthood. More than half a decade ago, the World Health Organization proposed that adolescence is a period between 10 to 20 years, although the endpoint of the adolescence period was less defined. It was when the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child defined a child as an individual aged between 0 and 18; adolescence was formally defined as the period between 10 and 19 years of age. Having said that, we must acknowledge that adolescence’s defining age may vary across cultures and countries worldwide.
