Migraine is a neurological disorder that is traditionally characterised by a throbbing or pulsatile headache, episodic in nature and occasionally self-limiting. Headache is a nonspecific symptom and can occur in a wide variety of physical and mental disorders. The headache in classical migraine follows a pattern with autonomic symptoms that have led to define it as a definite neurological disorder. The International Classification of Headache Disorders 3 (ICHD 3) lists migraine with aura, migraine without aura (including hemiplegic migraine, chronic migraine), complications of migraine (including status migrainous, migrainous infarction, persistent aura triggered seizure and persistent aura without infarction), probable migraine, episodic syndromes associated with migraine (including cyclical vomiting, abdominal migraine, benign paroxysmal vertigo and benign spasmodic torticollis). Migrainous spells are often but not invariably precipitated by a trigger, e.g. dehydration, intense physical activities, challenging sensory environments, motion, menstruation cycles, stress and anxiety, sleep deprivation and some food products like chocolate, cheese, red wine, red meat, alcohol and citrus fruits.
