Key global frameworks and guiding strategies, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030, underscore the pivotal role of the private sector in fostering community resilience and sustainable development. While the importance of the private sector is acknowledged, there still remains a crucial need to explore the inherent ‘business case’ that motivates commercial enterprises to actively participate in disaster risk management (DRM) and contribute to humanitarian efforts in view of strengthening community resilience and sustainable development. This paper offers a conceptual exploration of the changing dynamics within the private sector's engagement in promoting community resilience and sustainable development through an analysis of the evolving landscape of private sector involvement in DRM. It explores how businesses are increasingly acknowledging the need to protect their operations from disasters while also supporting development initiatives that assist communities affected by such events. In addition, this paper critically examines the evolving relationship between private sector engagement, community resilience, and sustainable development. By analyzing this relationship, the study aims to provide evidence-based insights, shedding light on the mutually beneficial value addition that occurs when businesses actively participate in DRM initiatives. In doing so, it contributes to the ongoing discourse on how private sector involvement can bolster both community resilience and sustainable development goals, fostering a holistic approach to disaster risk reduction and management.
