LMSs are already a tradition for use in supporting activities of teaching and learning within the institution of higher education, promoting collaboration, and accessibility to content. LMSs operate under the assumption that students’ learning preferences are the same, even for special students. As a result, this has led to high failure rates, consequently escalating dropout rates. This suggests a need for personalized learning, to promote instant feedback, adaptation of learning path, and inclusion of all students using GenAI. Lecturers and students can benefit from a more engaging, individualized, and efficient educational journey using learning management systems that harness the capabilities of AI. Of these, there are quite a few use cases of AI in education that literature has provided, but hardly ever do these studies bring out the integration theme of these AI tools within an LMS. This paper thereby fills this gap by proposing an integration model, emphasizing the process of integration of GenAI into an LMS over several steps. This latter will consist of two approaches from which the institution will have to choose, based on its needs and demands. There have been studies which have been chosen as supportive of the proposed integration model. As such, there needs to be careful planning and evaluation to ensure successful integration of GenAI to harness its benefits within an LMS. This paper makes a theoretical contribution to the body of knowledge, and this model can form a fundamental model of integration in whichever domain.
