Does the Government Sponsor Religious Violence? An Analysis of Mob Violence and Sectarian Violence Due to Restrictive Religious Policies
摘要
This paper examines the impact of restrictive religious policies on the ongoing mob and sectarian violence in some developing countries. Some prohibitive regulations such as banning religious clothing symbols and harassing the certain group of believers are two main examples of governments’ misconduct. Interestingly, the freedom of religion is likely to have an adverse effect because of the constitution. Drawing on datasets from Pew Research Centre on Global Restriction on Religion in 2018, this paper runs a panel data regression analysis to investigate the link between restrictive religious policies and violence. It argues that while the relationship between state-sponsored harassment and mob violence is statistically significant, the link of some restrictive policies and sectarian violence has been salient in recent times. Particularly, it takes place in predominantly certain religious countries in some Asian countries.
