Since the first Diaspora Congress in 2012, the government of Indonesia has paid more attention to the Indonesian diaspora because of its potential. Diaspora is an important asset for every country, including Indonesia. Indonesian diaspora spread over 193 countries in the world. Indonesian diaspora in Malaysia, especially Indonesian professional diaspora, have a pivotal role in the development of both home and host countries. They have the potential to help increase the competitiveness of the Indonesian nation. Based on the field research conducted in Malaysia in 2019, most Indonesian professionals diaspora were working in several strategic sectors such as oil and gas, information and technology (IT), transportation, aerospace, and transnational corporations. In addition, they also have a good network, either through alumni network, ethnicity, organization, or religious affiliation. This paper discusses how the potential of Indonesian professional diaspora in Malaysia can support the national development of Indonesia through their roles, networks, and transfer of knowledge.
