Where is Our Old Respect for Each Other? Reflection on Indonesia Society Towards Homosexuality at the Beginning of the 20th and 21st Centuries
摘要
Gender and sexuality discourse has changed in Indonesian or the Dutch East Indies societies’ perspective, specifically for homosexuals, during the beginning of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Nowadays, it is common to find cases that discriminate against gender and sexual minorities, including homosexuals. Either directly or the role of the media in strengthening stigma in society. It is a problem for Indonesia, which is considered an intolerant country, but on the other hand, it is also a country that upholds democracy. Therefore, this article aims to look at the process of changing perspective on gender and sexuality discourse with a focus on homosexuality. It starts by comparing and analyzing phenomena related to the existence of homosexuals in two different periods. During the research, historical methods have been used in data collection obtained from manuscripts, archives, official reports, newspapers, academic works, journal, and articles. This article found that a change in perspective on gender and sexuality discourse, especially homosexuality, occurred during the colonial government's hunt for homosexuals in the Dutch East Indies from 1938 to 39. Through this journey, acceptance and respect for homosexuals as part of social and cultural diversity in the Dutch East Indies were lost until now.
