GIS is a tool with user-input data sets which is fundamentally and universally applicable and used for capturing, transforming, managing, analysing, and presenting the information which is geographically referenced. The following paper provides a thorough review of GIS technique in the field of geotechnical engineering emphasizing the adoption of the technology in the spatial map generation for the regions to make understand the character of the region comprehensively. GIS aids in handling a huge quantum of dataset from collection to interpolation and interpretation. Huge quantum of dataset can easily be displayed in the form of thematic maps which aids the end-users to understand more clearly and make wise decision depending on the available information. These maps might prove to be an effective tool for the practitioner engineers working for large scale project to make inference about the site and probably relocating the site if the site is more problematic. On the other hand, where geotechnical investigations are usually ignored for the small-scale projects, in those cases also these spatial maps might prove to be a decisive tool. Thus, these maps might also be a economizing factor in the infrastructure projects. While, the researchers working in the study region can easily understand the character of the site and innovate the solution for the condition of the site accordingly.

摘要
