Black cotton (BC) soil is rich in montmorillonite mineral, they exhibit poor strength and high swelling characteristics in the presence of water. In the present study, feasibility of using biochar a sustainable biomass material for stabilizing BC soil is investigated. The BC soil used for the experimental studies had a maximum dry density of 1.57 g/cc at an optimum moisture content of 22%. For the study, three different dosages of biochar are used 2, 4 and 6%. These proportions of biochar are added to BC soil and the variation of optimum moisture content and maximum dry density is studied. To determine the strength characteristics Unconfined Compressive Strength tests and California Bearing Ratio tests are carried out biochar blended BC soils. The change in the fabric of BC soil with the addition of biochar is also investigated through SEM studies. From the studies, it is observed that there is an increase in strength with the addition of biochar content. However, the percentage increase in strength is maximum at a biochar content of 4%. The study also compares the reduction in pavement thickness with the addition of biochar to BC soil.
