The Relation Between Land Use and Land Cover Changes and the Landslide Disaster Using NDVI and LULC Map in Ponmudi, Kerala

Landslide inventories are useful for analysing the density of landslides in a specific area as a basis for estimating landslide probability and converting susceptibility maps into hazard maps, which is required for risk assessment. In hilly regions, changes in land use and land cover (LULCCs) can alter the terrain, flora, and material properties, making landslides more likely. Landslip prevention and land resources management depend on an understanding of the relationship between LULCCs and landslip occurrences. This project created quite comprehensive landslip inventories for the Ponmudi area of Kerala, India, covering the years 1990–1992. Using landslip data from the GSI portal and pre- and post-event high-resolution satellite images (HRSIs) from Google Earth, a collaborative mapping technique was employed. The analysis was conducted using ARCGIS Software. By calculating their Normalised Difference Vegetation Index for Land Cover categorisation, land resources may be simply evaluated. For the NDVI and LULC study, remote sensing data from Landsat TM and sentinel series photos were gathered. An analysis was conducted on the changes in land use and land cover (LULC) that occurred between 1990 and 2020. The majority of the landslides happened in vegetated areas rather than in built-up areas, according to the data. The densely vegetated area has had a large number of landslides, as indicated by the NDVI map. The findings indicate that the study region has not seen any major changes in land use or landcover. For each landslide starting site, the study of the LULCCs from 1990 to 2020 shows that a very tiny proportion of landslides happened in areas. This investigation of landslip LULCCs revealed that for a brief while, there were no obvious connections between landslip incidents and LULCCs.
