Foundation layout is developed for a project to map the foundation footprint details of all buildings and structures that have been designed and detailed for the project. The foundation layouts particularly for shallow foundation layouts include foundation sizes arrived based on the column dimensions, loading, soil bearing capacity, and settlement characteristics. While making such foundation layout’s, due to the constraints in space or to include a foundation of structure in the existing layout of the structures, it becomes necessary to sometimes have paper joints between the foundations or provide only minimal space between the foundations. The paper explains certain illustrations through case studies of methods to check and resolve the foundation interferences wherein it effects and reduces the bearing capacity of foundations. As part of the analysis, the methods given by J. E. Bowles, IS code method of checking loss of contact of foundation with soil were checked. Adopting the Bowles method, the stress isobars were drawn in AutoCAD for various radii of influence based on pressure intensities calculated using Boussinesq’s pressure distribution. The numerical investigations are also carried out using finite element method and compared with methods given in J. E. Bowles. This paper also outlines the limitations of the available methods and outlines the necessity of specific methods and also inclusion in the IS code provisions with clarity.

摘要
