Confirmatory Factor Analysis of Climate Change Adaptation: Designing Action Plan for Agricultural Livelihood in Lower North-Eastern Region, Thailand

The agricultural livelihood, especially in the lower North-eastern region of Thailand which heavily depends on agriculture, is confronted with considerable challenges due to climate variability in high potential both drought and flood. To effectively tackle these challenges and promote adaptation to climate change. It is crucial to comprehend the various factors influencing adaptation strategies within the agricultural sector. In this study, researchers developed a climate change adaptation toolkit specifically designed for community-level use. The toolkit focused on key factors including; (1) Risk perception (2) root-cause-affected agricultural livelihood (3) exposure (4) vulnerability (5) alternative solution and (6) action plan. In order to collect data and evaluate the components of the toolkit, a workshop was conducted using action research methodology and distributed surveys to 43 participants from two sub-districts of the research area. The collected data was analysed through the Confirmatory factor analytical (CFA) to evaluate the relationships among components in the model. The results confirmed that there is a significant interrelationship among these six components, indicating that the toolkit effectively addresses climate change adaptation at a community level. The application of the toolkit in the communities effectively address the communities’ needs and perceptions as well as the factor structure of the toolkit is confirmed. However, the workshops faced some challenges, despite active participant engagement. It was tough for participant to align their needs and existing problems to form an action plan. Therefore, workshop facilitators must persuade participants engaging deliberative approach with diverse members in community during creating their plans. In conclusion, from a sustainability standpoint, this approach, tailored to local variations could effectively enhance the area’s resilience to climate variability more effectively than a top-down policy framework. Each community would have its own plan to address its unique challenges, resulting in a more sustainable outcome.
